ARTS & SOCIAL NETWORK (ASN) NOVEMBER EVENT AT THE WHITECHAPEL GALLERY

Pleased that everyone had a good time there's no telling what can be accomplished when you put a bright shiny new facilitator into the mix so a really big thank you to Angela for making it the very best experience for all concerned.. When I spoke to her on the phone I knew it she was going to do the business… yes, no?

Now then, November is already upon us and I've had a really good offer from Fatima and our ol’ mate Danny "the Hat in the Cravat" Lehan (who hosted our John Stezager experience back in March) at the Whitechapel Gallery to get out the very best bits of his creative repertoire and construct a special two hour (inter-)activity around their current roster of exhibits..

First up is the contemporary Polish Painter & all round wunderkinder Wilhelm Sisal, I won’t waste anymore words here as this guy (see below) takes you a lot deeper into the eye of Sisal’s hurricane than I ever could…

http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/wilhelm-sasnal

Also on show is a colour coded Richard of Yorkish curational jamboree bag of work, selected by Cornelia Parker (who stands tall on the oft male coded podium of 20th conceptualism)

http://www.whitechapelgallery.org/exhibitions/government-art-collection-selected-by-cornelia-parker-richard-of-york-gave-battle-in-vain

As with March's tour Daniel is going to let us have another post show creato-fest in the studio on the 3rd floor, no presha if you don’t feel the urge there’s plenty of books and magazines up there to browse and I personally found it really memorable because of the incredible views over London from those BIG BIG windows... And then it will be back down to their newly refurbished café-bar for some art socialising and some eating and drinking if you fancy a refuel...

All of this will happen on Tues 29th Nov from the 12:45 meet up for a 1pm start...
Get your RSVP's in there is a 20 people limit so we can have a slightly bigger group this month...

As always...hope to see you there.

We need YOU to support our fundraising event.

Don't miss out on our PD short film screening on Thursday 10th November - visit http://www.emergenceplus.org.uk/october-2011.html

Here is the new flyer for June’s ASN. This time we will be heading over to South Ken for a curatorial tour of the new “Cult of Beauty” Exhibition at the V&A.

This recently opened exhibition, looks at the aesthetic movement from 1860 – 1900... It has managed to pull in everything from painting to furniture / graphic design and interiors. These are the kind of exhibitions the V&A really excels at and should be another really interesting event.

Here is a short video about the show with the V&A’s very own dandy, Stephen Calloway waxing lyrical about the aesthetes.

Le Rêve de Newton is Juan delGado’s poetic reflection on ageing, vulnerability and the changing landscape as well as an exploration of the politics of sport and the body.

Since 1996, principally in photography and video, delGado’s work has explored urban territory, focusing on the physical and psychological impact it has upon us. Focusing on the traumatic experience the city affects in the individual such as violence, displacement and alienation, delGado has developed an extensive body of work that includes The Wounded Image (1997 – 2003), a photographic series that questions how we relate to issues such as trauma, homophobia, misogyny and child abuse. He has also produced several works such as Don’t Look Under the Bed (2001), Who Are You Entertaining to? (2002) and Suspended Reverie (2006) in which he continues his enquiry into trauma and dislocation.

A 3-channel environmental installation

"Since 1996, delGado’s work has explored urban territory, focusing on the physical and psychological impact it has upon us. Focusing on the traumatic experience the city affects in the individual such as violence, displacement and alienation, delGado has developed a body of work that includes The Wounded Image (1997 – 2003), a photographic series that question how we relate to issues such as trauma, homophobia, misogyny & child abuse. He has also produced several works such as Don’t Look Under the Bed (2001), Who Are You Entertaining to? (2002) and Suspended Reverie ( 2006) in which he continues his enquiry into trauma & dislocation.

Observing and interpreting the social mutations of the city environment, delGado aimed to explore Bogotá neighbourhoods, focusing on those so-called no-go places that somehow stand out as a consequence of the briskness of economic and social change as well as its sometimes harrowing human costs. Trauma itself is a concept that can appropriately bridge the gap between the individual and the surrounding society in understanding the impact of conflict and displacement; trauma threatens the individual’s sense of self and the predictability of the world. Consequently, basic beliefs in trust, confidence and connectedness with other people are undermined.

In his research, delGado took into account what sociologist and philosopher Henri Lefebvre said: “thinking about the city is to hold and maintain its conflictual aspects of urban and suburban life: constraints and possibilities, peacefulness and violence, meetings and solitude, gatherings and separation, the trivial and the poetic, brutal functionalism and surprising improvisation.” His project reflects on the idea of belonging, to the need we all have for positioning, for locating ourselves in an environment; in other words, in a context that makes sense to us. His departing point took on a terrain of reflections on several issues: how time has passed by, how the place was recorded in history, what contradictions appear in the territory, the perception of the landscape as an entity loaded with meaning, the relationship between landscape and power, between landscape and memory".

OCTOBER RAW POETRY WORKSHOP & OPEN MIC IS NIGH!

Come listen, create, perform
@ Central Station
37 Wharfdale Road
Kings Cross
London N1 9SD
Poetry Workshop 7.30pm
(see this month's theme further down)

Prebooked open mic 9pm
(to secure a slot or for more information: mail rawpoetry@rocketmail.com)

Final date to be included in the advertised line-up is Oct the 1st and will then be shown on www.myspace.com/rawpoetry(this, for now, is the offricial site) CT.

RAW mics are packed with great and original performers of the spoken & sung word.

“An as fantastic as eclectic mix of styles, ages, sexes and cultural backgrounds makes RAW an inspiring setting for networking, developing self and enjoyment in an unbiassed, unprejudiced and pressure free zone! “

At RAW mics, the audience give GEMS/votes to the acts. Those are counted at two successive events and four acts are awarded a 30/40 minute set at a different venue.

This is a great chance to showcase or/and do a longer – perhaps more fulfilling – gig.

The 4th of October is the second of those successive events and these are the four top GEMS so far (in no particular order):

Louise Larchbourne – poetess/voice artist

David Kerrigan – singer/songwriter/guitarist

Panama Dave – songwriter/guitarist

Alex Etchart – singer/songwriter/guitarist

But anything can happen...

RAW is usually the first Monday of every month at the Central Station bar RAW GEMS is usually the third Monday of every second month at a different location

“It's not how good you are – It is how real you are”

“Give from your heart for your Art”

CT (links further down) holds the workshop upstairs. Please be on time to get the most out of it. (Pens and paper is provided. It's free, but donations are greatly appreciated.)

Each month has a different theme to work from – but sticking to it is not a must. The theme is merely there as a starting point.

October theme go as follows:

Motion
Emotive
Movement
Emotion
Nature

Poetry is full of flowing energy. I would have to search very hard to find a poem that I could describe as 'stagnant' or 'pointless'.

Poetry doesn't always move the reader, but it is still what I would call a pattern of moving word-mass – like, perhaps, the waves of the ocean, the breeze touching the tops of mountains, lava sprouting from the volcano or the mole digging its way through earth. There is strength and life.

Poetry can inspire, give answers, dare to ask questions, be emotive, trigger enthusiasm, solace and, maybe more than anything, give the reader as well as the writer a sense of not being alone - a sense of being heard.

The October workshop theme is all of the above. Think of something that you feel is carrying your thoughts forward – even if the thoughts come from the past or future dreams and wishes.

Feel free to use the five words at the top as a starting point, but don't worry if your words stray. Just let it flow.

If you can: breathe in deeply, hold your breath while counting to seven before exhaling very slowly.

Do this five times or until you feel a hint of weightlessness. A calm breathing and a relaxed body free the thoughts to blow and flow – listen to them and write them down.

BARMY PARK - Exploring Art & Madness

Do we need a little madness to set us free or freedom to be mad? The free arts festival in Bethnal Green Library harks back to the history of the site as a 'private madhouse' between 1727 and 1922. To this day The Green is still known locally as 'Barmy Park'. The exhibition and events set out to explore the links between madness and creativity and the stereotype of the 'mad artist'.

Barmy Park has been curated by artists Imogen O'Rorke and Nicole Wassall in collaboration with Core Arts, a local arts charity which aims to break down the prejudices surrounding mental health.

ARTS & SOCIAL NETWORK Thursday 13th May, 2010 6.00pm

The Arts & Social Network is an opportunity for those who identify with the diagnosis of personality disorder to meet at cultural events. It is being organised to give people who may be very isolated an opportunity to make new friends and enjoy the experience of going to a cultural event with a peer group who can appreciate the difficulties of having a personality disorder.

Irving Penn (1917-2009) was one of the great photographers of our time. Focusing specifically on his portraits of major cultural figures of the last seven decades, Irving Penn Portraits is a glorious celebration of his work in this genre.

The exhibition is brought together from major international collections and includes over 120 silver and platinum prints, many vintage, ranging from his portraits for Vogue magazine in the 1940s to some of his last work. Penn photographed an extraordinary range of sitters from the worlds of literature, music and the visual and performing arts. Among those featured in the exhibition are Truman Capote, Salvador Dali, Christian Dior, T.S. Eliot, Duke Ellington, Grace Kelly, Rudolf Nureyev, Al Pacino, Edith Piaf, Pablo Picasso and Harold Pinter.

WORLD COMMUNITY ARTS DAY 17th Feb 2010

"ART AS A CATALYST FOR CARING AND SHARING"

Be creative on the day to raise an important issue you believe in and help create a World Festival Society for a day.

All we ask of you on that day is to do an arts project, however small or big on the 17th Feb 2010 or as near to the date as possible.

Be creative about an issue that you believe promotes "caring and sharing". Song, dance, theatre, draw, paint, write, make, poem, photogragh, lecture, walk, tour, talk, art class anyway that you feel you are creative!

It maybe an ongoing project you wish to highlight. It is being creative that is important.
It could be a small or large gathering. Or add an image or sound, etc to an existing website to mark this day. If you can mark the event on your website in the build up to it that would be great too.

We are not asking for money, but your creativity and artistic skills to celebrate this day.
The aim is to create a world festival society for a day. To illustrate how festival and celebration through art can provide answers.

Bobby Baker is one of the most widely acclaimed and popular performance artists working today. She began her diary drawings in 1997 when she became a patient at a day centre. DIVERSE CITY
The Other Side Gallery Group Exhibition of Contemporary Outsider Art 2009

This exhibition takes place at the Candid Arts gallery space, it is an accumulation of art by Contemporary Outsider Artists (working/practicing art) in London.

The Other Side Gallery welcomes this great opportunity to show, tell and explore the diversity and style of an artistic community with a largely untrained eye.

'Naïve', 'simplistic' and 'raw' are terms used in the art world to describe Outsider Art however, the added individualism of this collection of work moves beyond the viewer’s need to categorise.

Working in various media, these artworks are created by artists from a broad and wide ranging background that include the homeless, mental health, learning disabilities and represent in many ways the 'Diverse City' that we live in.
